10 Most Annoying Characters in the Pokémon Franchise

The Pokémon anime will always have a dedicated fanbase, but with a series that spans more than 26 seasons, not every character will capture the popularity of Ash’s Pikachu or even Team Rocket’s Meowth. It’s only inevitable with a cast of over a thousand humans and Pokémon altogether. However, a select few characters might even be a cause of irritation, whether it’s due to their actions or the writing team clumsily handling their storyline.
Children are far less critical of what they see on television than teenagers and young adults, but even they might take issue with some of these characters. For instance, it’s only natural they want to see Ash Ketchum finally win a championship league, only to lose in a very forceful way. This is why the likes of Tobias and Alain have a notable hatedom, but they aren’t the only ones, as the Pokémon anime has quite the cast of irksome characters.
With the departure of Misty from the original Pokémon anime, the writers needed to replace Ash’s longtime companion, so they played it safe with two brand-new characters, May and Max. While the former is well liked for her adventurous personality and strong battling skills, the latter definitely lacks the same level of reception. Max is often derided for being a smug brat who likes to lecture other trainers, even though he’s not old enough to be one himself. It’s very telling he never appeared in the Pokémon Journeys series.
