The thesis of the Japanese animator Otarou, that food scenes in anime series often have a sublime erotic connotation, caused violent debates among fans a few days ago. We summarize.
Are food scenes the new Ecchi?
In a post on his X-account, Otarou explained that the discomfort of some spectators could therefore stir in anime meal scenes that these scenes and Ecchi representations were closer than one assumed:
»From the point of view of the direction, food and ecchi scenes have a great affinity for erotic representations (in fact they are practically on the same level). I think that’s the reason why so many people feel repelled. If you install sex appeal into a meal scene, the effect is even multiplied. “
According to Otarou, perception plays a key role. For example, the scene of a woman who is drinking alone at a bar at the viewer inevitably creates a certain sensuality, even if the presentation is casual. If the woman were to be replaced by a man, the sensual impression would significantly decrease.
What is your opinion on this topic? Have you ever associated ordinary meal scenes with Ecchi? Please let us know in the comments!
