The anime-inspired cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender has strong themes of healing, personal growth, and forgiveness in the context of the brutal Hundred-Year War. Once Fire Lord Ozai was defeated and his fleet destroyed, the entire world had many deep scars that needed healing, and for some characters, those scars were the physical kind. Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation stood out as a scarred young man, and his burn scar was more than just an accessory to make him look more villainous. It also represented those themes of healing and personal development.

There is plenty to know not just about how and when Prince Zuko got his burn scar on his left eye, but what that distinctive scar means for him as an exiled prince and redeemed villain, and even what it means for his personal relationships and the world as a whole. Zuko’s scar never went away, making it a permanent reminder of his abusive relationship with his father, and it also marked how deeply the Fire Nation harmed the world. But it also represents second chances and hope, in an indirect way, including one of Avatar‘s most popular romantic ships.

Zuko and his scars appeared quite early in Avatar: The Last Airbender, but fans didn’t discover the truth of his scars until the episode “The Storm” in Book One: Water. That episode explored the painful backstories of both Aang and Zuko, the first hint that those two boys weren’t so different after all. While Aang’s flashback involved his guilt about leaving the Southern Air Temple, Zuko’s own flashback explored a good-hearted prince suffering for doing the right thing. The flashback not only established what Zuko was like in his pre-scar years, but also showed what his father, the villainous Fire Lord Ozai, was like. Ozai was a classic supervillain, a cruel and ambitious man who would gladly pay with other people’s lives to accomplish his plans. Zuko objected to a bloody strategy in the Fire Lord’s meeting, a misstep that led to him fighting an Agni Kai to defend his honor.
