In an interview with the US website Anime News Network, Tomohiro Tokunaga, President and CEO of Comix Wave Films (»Suzume«), commented on the future plans of the successful studio. We summarize.
Only original films
Tomohiro Tokunaga started his career as a producer at Telecom Animation Film, where he worked on series such as “Lupin the Third” and “Tower of God”. After joining the Studio Comix Wave Films as a senior producer in 2020, he was promoted to President and CEO in 2023.
Even if the 36-year-old cannot show quite as much experience as one or the other veteran in the anime industry, of course he would like to at least maintain the previous success of Comix Wave Films.
The most important point would be that Comix Wave Films does not work like the majority of anime studios. Because instead of getting money to encourage others of others, they would apply the money themselves and develop original stories, as you would have done in Makoto Shinkai’s films.
In the past, this model has proven to be very successful in the past, which is why Tokunaga would like to keep it in the future.
Search for “new shinkai”
In this context, he mentioned that a newcomer to the next film would have been commissioned again for the next film-to find the next big genius. Makoto Shinkai would be one »Monster«When it comes to achieving atal results, not all directors should be that way.
Even if you don’t find a “new Shinkai”, three people who make decent films would be enough. In the further course he teased that the next big hit might even come from a non-Japanese director.
Already in 2018, Comix Wave Films with “Flavors of Youth” released a work by the Chinese directors Li Haoling and Xiaoxing Yi.
For such a collaboration, however, he presupposes that a director who wants to produce an anime in Japan can also speak Japanese. Because the language is part of the culture and the basis of good teamwork.
It remains to be seen what the next few years will have for Comix Wave Films, but a fact is calming in any case: At 52, Makoto Shinkai, who is already working on his next film, should still have some ideas in stock.
