For perfect poses: “Bleach” team uses photos of yourself as a template

As part of an interview, the directors of “Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War” revealed that employees were posed for photos in order to use them as references for the animation of key scenes. We summarize.



Photos as reference material

Anyone who has ever had a pen in hand knows the problem if you simply cannot imagine a certain pose or movement when drawing and have to fall back on existing templates. But don’t worry, not only we lay people are struggling with it.

Because the animation team of »Bleach: Thousand Year Blood was« made photos of itself to use them as reference material for animation scenes.

The directors Tomohisa Taguchi and Hikaru Murata revealed this when they were asked about the most memorable moments during the production of the third part, and in this context also promptly gave an example:

“In the 20th anniversary PV of› Bleach ‹, Rukia’s layout, which is hidden in the closet, while Yuzu and Ichigo are in front of it, after consulting the production team, the director and the animators with a photo to catch the right angle«.

Murata still remember the words of the animation Director Michio Hasegawa: “If we can’t draw it, we just take a photo!” With another key scene, the blood pact between Yhwach and Uryu, even video references would have been used to collect everything meticulously.

“Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War” has so far comprised 40 episodes, which were published on Disney+ between October 2022 and December 2024. When the final fourth part will start is not yet known.
