As part of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the persons of Sony predicted that anime will make a considerable part of future growth. We summarize below.

Forecast strong growth

At the top-class presentation, in addition to Hiroki Totoki, the President of Sony, also Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll, and Atsuhiro Iwakami, President of Aniplex, the most important anime producer in the group, were on stage.

There it was said that one is currently expecting that the anime sector would grow into a 60 billion dollar business by 2030, which is why Sony would like to use his budget, according to Totoki, in this industry: “With optimism we see the growth of anime and its effects on our company”.

So it was not surprising that Sony increased its shares in Kadokawa, one of the leading Japanese producers in terms of anime, manga and games, to almost ten percent – and also reached deep into the pocket, because the costs were around 320 million euros.

The current events underpin this positive assessment, because the number of crunchyroll subscribers has also grown from $ 3 million to more than 15 million since the takeover in 2020.

High expectations of “Demon Slayer”

The coming years should also be undoubtedly successful, because with the “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” trilogy, the final of one of the most sales-strong anime franchises of the recent times is due-and this should break all the records.

The previous film of the series, “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train”, had more than $ 507 million in the box office during his global publication between 2020 to 2021-the highest amount so far that a Japanese animated film has ever achieved. However, according to Iwakami, the fan base has grown significantly again since then, which is why you want to exceed these numbers.

In addition, anime has changed from a marginal phenomenon to a central component of youth culture. In the United States alone, around 42 percent of the “Generation Z” regularly see anime-many even rather than the strong sales NFL, which is known to be the most successful sports league worldwide and the figurehead of US sports.

Strong competition

But Sony has great competition when it comes to using the growing potential of anime in all markets. Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video have invested heavily to gain access to the limited range of top titles.

Although Crunchyroll has a much more extensive anime portfolio, Netflix with its anime titles generates higher income than the Sony streaming platform, which has to be satisfied with second place.

However, according to Purini, the home advantage is trusted at Crunchyroll, after all, one would address anime fans with a large and diverse offer, whereas the competition is more likely to try to make laypeople anime fans.

With the crunchyroll channel on Prime Video, Roku and YouTube available in many countries, you would also reach new spectators.
