The story of the Witch and the Beastanime works carefully to balance world building with plot progression. Through the use of separate story arcs, different areas and types of magic are explored. Necromancy is not one of the forms of magic relevant to Guideau and Ashaf’s journey. When it comes up as the focus for a story, Ashaf immediately cedes the investigation to his coworkers at the Order of Magical Resonance. For one arc, Phanora Kristoffel and her assistant, Johan, take center stage.

Necromancy has a long history in the world. With magic working alongside modern conventions, laws regarding all sorts of magical issues have appeared. There are many countries that banned necromancy altogether, but others simply have strict rules regarding raising the dead. Necromancy is a difficult and complex type of magic; even when done exactly right, it has dire consequences.

In order to bring someone back from the dead, there are certain requirements. To begin with, some part of their body must still exist. It doesn’t have to be their whole self. However, if someone were to be cremated, they would be impossible to raise. Following that, the necromancer must have enough power or other resources to restore what’s missing. Without restoring the body, it makes it hard for the undead to gain any kind of autonomy. From there, the necromancer must do regular maintenance on the bond between body and soul to keep the undead sane and the body functioning. The undead can be brought back through maintenance if their body is damaged, healing them by restoring the bond.
