Icons like Goku, Gojo, Frieren, and Mikasa, have become major faces for anime at large, but there’s more to this trope than a throw of fists.
OP characters have become a staple part of the anime industry, leading to two separate extremes. The first are characters who lean into using their overwhelming powers and relish in them, while the second extreme are powerful characters who often prefer to not use them at all. With layers of character development, battle mechanics, and fantasy escapism, the OP trope is a critical part of anime.
For newer members of the anime community or those who simply might not know, the abbreviation “OP” stands for overpowered. This abbreviation is used across several fandoms, but it is mostly used by gamers and anime fans when referring to certain characters in action-based series. When a specific character is impossible or nearly impossible to defeat in competition, they are deemed OP.
