In a current interview, Attsushi Mizoguchi, CEO of Myanimelist, spoke about the worldwide boom of “Solo Leveling” and made it clear that in his opinion, success is mainly due to the history of the work. We summarize.

Excellent work

The anime adaptation of »Solo Leveling« can undoubtedly be described as a phenomenon, after all, it became a huge success within a very short time-which, according to Myanimelist CEO ATSUSHI MIZOGUCHI, is also completely understandable.

As part of an interview that is generally about the growing popularity of anime and manga outside of Japan, it was discussed that manga titles are difficult to win new readers due to their horizontal format. On the contrary to the smartphone-friendly and vertical web tons.

When asked whether the great success of “Solo Leveling” was due to the fact that the template is a web toon in addition to the original novel and not a manga, Mizoguchi had a clear opinion:

»While webtoon hits like› Solo Leveling ‹have appeared, many manga fans still prefer to read on the PC in overseas. For the painting users, the use of PC and smartphone is about 50/50. I believe that ‘solo leveling’ was successful because it is simply an excellent work and not because it is easier to read. ”

Webtoons with clear advantages

However, he also admitted that web toons such as “Solo Leveling” in today’s digital age had a clear advantage over traditional printed manga:

»Web goons are designed for consumption on the smartphone, while manga has been created for physical reading. Manga usually does not fit very well on narrow smartphone screens and require a zoom in and out to read the text and recognize fine details- an experience that is often more difficult than simple scrolling in a weboOO. «

Despite the huge popularity of “Solo Leveling”, fans still have to wait for the announcement of a sequel – and nothing should change that quickly, since the responsible producer recently damped expectations.

The anime implementation of »Solo Leveling« currently consists of two seasons, which are available on call with German and Japanese voice output at Crunchyroll. The first season will be released on DVD and Blu-ray from July 18, 2025.
