Naruto: Summoning Jutsu, Explained

Over the span of hundreds of episodes, the Naruto anime showcased an astonishing variety of ninjutsu, martial arts techniques, weapons, and tailed beasts, some of which helped shape the course of history, like the Sharingan eyes or Naruto’s biju form. However, not every ninja can use a fancy kekkei genkai or wield a Tailed Beast’s power as their own. That’s why the Naruto anime also features more generic and universal jutsu that any trained shinobi can use, with the summoning jutsu being a fine example.
The concept of summoning jutsu was introduced quite early in the series, and it remained a staple of any shinobi’s fighting style until near the end of the story. Summoning jutsu is surprisingly simple to use even in the heat of battle, and it’s a great way for any ninja to get the advantage in numbers and have a creature watch their back. There’s much more to know about how the summoning jutsu is used and how certain Naruto characters made the most of it while fighting their many battles.
The summoning jutsu is a type of ninjutsu that deals with space, simply because it can teleport a certain animal or even an item from one location to another once the summoning jutsu is used. It is a C-ranked jutsu that requires a few basic hand seals to perform, though the characters in Naruto are rarely seen performing those hand signs. After all, thre anime started showing hand signs less and less, perhaps to streamline the combat system because fans were already used to signs. Also, unlike most other jutsu, the summoning jutsu involves multiple parties, so a contract must be formed. As was shown a few times in the Naruto anime, mostly with Naruto Uzumaki himself, a ninja who intends to summon certain animals is required to sign their name in blood on a scroll, and then press their bloody fingerprints onto the paper to complete the contract and prove their identity. Such scrolls can have multiple names logged in them.
