The Japanese television company Nippon TV recently announced its extremely ambitious global strategy for the coming years. We summarize.

Massive investments planned

The Japanese television market has been stagnating for several years and amounts to around 1.6 trillion yen (around 10.2 billion euros) annually, whereas the foreign market for Japanese content continues to boom with 4.7 trillion yen (around 30 billion euros).

So what is the logical consequence for a Japanese television station, such as Nippon TV? You want to transfer your content abroad.

However, it should be noted that Nippon TV has not been a simple television station for a long time, but a media giant that has over 40 companies under his leadership. These also include popular anime studios, such as Tatzunoko Production (“Psycho-Pass 2”, “Speed Racer” and “Gatchaman”), Madhouse (“Hunter X Hunter”, “Death Note” and “Frier”) as well as Studio Ghibli since 2023.

No wonder that Nippon TV already plays an important role in the global market and achieved international sales of 12 billion yen (around 76.6 million euros) in 2024. However, this is far from satisfied – and the goals for the next few years are many times more ambitious.

Ambitious goals

The company is aiming for an international turnover of 30 billion yen (around 191 million euros) in 2027 and 1 Billion Yen (around 6.4 billion euros) in 2033. To achieve this, Nippon TV would like to continue its most popular anime franchises and also work with Hollywood giants to try varieties, dramas, films, music and live events.

One of the first steps in this plan provides for the opening of a head of foreign foreign in Los Angeles in July 2025. This should concentrate on the production of content and serve as the basis for the global strategy.

It remains to be seen whether Nippon TV can achieve its very ambitious goals and to what extent anime fans can benefit from the results on their domestic televisions. We keep you up to date as usual.
