The Wholecake Island Saga is one of the biggest arcs in One Piece, only shorter than Wano Country and Dressrosa in length, and featuring Luffy’s first true encounter with a Yonko. The arc breaks from the series’ typical formula in how it handles fights, with very few major battles taking place, but the quality of the showdowns more than makes up for this.
Luffy and the Strawhat Pirates’ mission to rescue Sanji on Wholecake Island allows for some of the best fights in modern One Piece. Sanji and Big Mom both star in several incredible brawls as the arc’s main hero and villain. Nami, Brook, and Carrot get rare opportunities to shine, and the newly introduced Charlotte Katakuri became an instant fan-favorite during his fight with Luffy.
One of the first fights in the Wholecake Island Saga is also one of the longest. Shortly after arriving in Big Mom’s territory, Luffy and Nami encounter one of her three Sweet Commanders, Charlotte Cracker. Cracker manages to challenge Luffy’s recently introduced Gear Four transformation, but while this should be exciting, his stall-based, defensive strategy drags the battle out to the point it becomes tedious.
