Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of “Super Smash Bros.”, recently caused violent debates at anime and video game fans with a statement. We summarize.
Own identity or standards?
When Masahiro Sakurai was awarded the Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs a few weeks ago, he used the subsequent interview to encourage his developer colleagues in the following words:
“The trend in the game industry goes again that Japanese should do what Japanese likes. Most recently, you have always developed Americanized products because various works were popular in the USA.
However, I have the feeling that lovers are not looking for such things, but for something unique and interesting from Japan. «
These words not only found well with gamers, but were also taken up by anime and manga fans, as many anime productions have tried to adapt to the western tastes in recent years.
What do you think of these claims? Should anime producers concentrate more on their own identity instead of trying to meet international standards? Let us know your opinion in the comments!
