Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is one of the best-reviewed movies of 2024, but this sadly didn’t translate into much sales success. The movie was a box office bomb, and even its quick release on video-on-demand wasn’t the major splash that the film needed to become a hint. Despite this failure on the big screen, there was another potential path that could have been much more successful.

At one point, Furiosa was planned as an anime series instead of a movie. The idea had a lot more logic behind it, as it could have built upon the universal push that anime as a whole is currently receiving. Likewise, a “Mad Max” anime was already a major hit back in the day, so the template was there to make the movie a much bigger hit in animated form.

The Mad Max movie franchise debuted in the late 1970s, with the series truly hitting its stride in the 1981 sequel, Mad Max II (also known as The Road Warrior or Mad Max II: The Road Warrior). This entry cemented the franchise’s tone and scope going forward, namely by focusing on the property’s post-apocalyptic wasteland and featuring all manner of brutal thugs and killers who were all decked out in ridiculous amounts of spikes and leather. Since being released, this movie has inspired and influenced countless other films. This includes a now iconic anime series that’s in many ways just as legendary as the film series that inspired it.
