A conflicted man with plenty of conviction, Monkey D. Garp is among the physically strongest people in the entire One Piece series, which earns him a significant reputation among his fellow Marines. The former Vice Admiral rejected a promotion to Admiral position several times in the past few decades, simply because he wants the freedom to do what he does, all without answering to the detestable Celestial Dragons that he despises.
There is never a dull moment with Garp, the father of Dragon and grandfather of Luffy. Everyone within the Monkey family lineage has rocked the world to its very core. Garp himself is from a golden era of legendary figures, which range from Gol D. Roger to Rocks D. Xebec, although he rarely provides a glimpse of his true power. Garp does have a personal code to follow, but his loyalties are often caught in between multiple factions.
Shortly after his first introduction, it becomes clear that Garp rarely takes situations too seriously. His power level is simply far beyond most characters in One Piece. This is first seen in the Diary of Koby-Meppo side arc. Garp is tasked with escorting disgraced former officer Morgan for his court martial. However, the criminal apparently struck him down with his signature ax-hand, which left many of the Marines present to start panicking.
