Ever since Ash Ketchum’s departure from the anime series, Roy had somewhat taken over his role in Pokémon Horizons. Liko is the lead protagonist of the new series, but Roy captures Ash’s fiery spirit with his love for battle. A fledgling member of the Rising Volt Tacklers, he is a very cheerful personality and he lives for the sheer thrill of adventure. Roy wants to fully realize his dream to challenge legendary Pokémon from his grandfather’s tale.
While he does have a lot in common with Ash, including a birthplace in the Kanto region, Roy’s distinctive identity sets him apart from being a simple retread. His personal life goals and trainer development in Pokémon battles couldn’t be any more different from Ash’s journey. Roy undergoes a unique expedition throughout Paldea, as he intends to explore the world to uncover several mysteries and find various treasures.
Ash’s Pikachu is truly a loyal companion to the very end, but that wasn’t always the case in the original anime series, particularly during its debut episode ”Pokémon, I Choose You!” Not only did Pikachu stubbornly refuse to enter its Poké Ball when asked, it also repeatedly electrocuted Ash in a very comical fashion. It wasn’t until Ash protected it from a flock of Spearow that Pikachu finally respected its trainer.
