The Legend of Korra is a hit action anime that takes place two generations after the end of the dreadful Hundred-Year War. By then, the elemental bending system had been evolved and refined even further, with major heroes and villains alike pushing the boundaries of how to bend fire, air, water, and earth. Some familiar bending techniques returned from the Avatar: The Last Airbender days, while others are all-new bending moves to up the ante.
Ordinary benders can control their elements in basic and conventional ways, such as Earthbenders throwing rocks and Waterbenders freezing water into ice on command, so those don’t count as noteworthy bending techniques. Meanwhile, the most talented and inventive benders have pioneered all-new ways to control these elements, along with mystical “energybending,” and these bending techniques are what help define this series’ entire combat system in memorable ways. Ten of them, in particular, show what elemental bending is truly capable of.
In the original Avatar: The Last Airbender, the popular character Toph Beifong used her sensitive earthbending to detect the heartbeat of other people. By doing that, she could tell when people were lying, since lying tended to boost a person’s heart rate. Decades later, an Earthbender named Aiwei did much the same as part of Zaofu’s security.
