It’s now becoming more expensive to watch popular anime like Studio Pierrot’s Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War following the latest price hike by major U.S. anime streamers Disney+ and Hulu.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, Hulu and Disney+ will raise prices for their streaming services on Oct. 17, 2024. Hulu’s ad-supported tier rises from $7.99 to $9.99, while its ad-free plan increases from $17.99 to $18.99. Disney+ rises $2 to $9.99, with its ad-free tier rising $2 to $15.99. ESPN will likewise see a price increase from $10.99 to $11.99. The changes are likely to push customers to the combined Hulu and Disney+ bundle which, despite also increasing by $1 to $10.99, is better value for money than purchasing single subscriptions.
Many fans have said that the bundling of services looks like a return to cable TV — a view that becomes more undeniable with Disney+’s new “Playlists” feature. Playlists will have linear programming focused on a specific theme. “Whether it’s news, kids’ content, popular genres, hit TV shows, or blockbuster films, there will be something for everyone in a lean-back viewing experience based on seasonality and interest,” Disney+ president Alisa Bowen added. Fellow anime streamer Adult Swim, for example, continues to see major success with its Toonami linear programming block; the launch of Toonami Rewind came as a direct result of this, showcasing older anime series like Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z and Naruto. Adult Swim owner Warner Bros. Discovery also owns streaming service Max, which recently announced a new bundle with Disney and Hulu for $16.99 monthly or $29.99 without ads.
