10 Classic Dragon Ball Games That Still Need A Remake

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball had a profound impact on anime and manga, but it’s also a franchise that found success in the video game industry. Dragon Ball video games have been around for nearly as long as the manga and there are more than 100 titles that have been produced since the ‘80s. Anime video games have been increasingly popular over the years and Dragon Ball’s ability to thrive in this market helped keep the franchise alive during the anime and manga’s dark years. There are current Dragon Ball video games that represent incredible quality and reflect just how far these titles have come, such as Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, and the upcoming Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO.
That being said, there are some excellent Dragon Ball releases from earlier gaming generations that have fallen into obscurity because they can’t be played on modern gaming hardware or are too hard to track down. There is no shortage of original Dragon Ball games. However, some of these classic titles deserve modern remakes so that they can be appreciated and enjoyed by a whole new generation of gamers.
Tose developed two prominent Dragon Ball Z games in 1995, Ultimate Battle 22 for the PlayStation and Shin Butoden for the Sega Saturn. While the PlayStation proved to be the more popular console, it’s actually the Saturn’s Dragon Ball Z: Shin Butoden that’s the superior of the two games. Shin Butoden and Ultimate Battle 22 both feature the same roster of 22 characters that utilize the same character sprites, but Shin Butdoen does a lot more with these elements and it’s an underrated ’90s gem that’s been lost to the overlooked Sega Saturn. Shin Butoden pulls from the Super Butoden series’ successful gameplay and it was even developed under the title, Dragon Ball Z: Super Butoden Sega Saturn.
