A few days ago, the recent trend of AI generated pictures in studio Ghibli style and their legality was discussed a few days ago. We summarize below.

Legal or not?

After Openaai published the most innovative image generator GPT-4O on March 25, 2025, which mainly imitated the hand-drawn aesthetics of Studio Ghibli, there was a true flood of AI generated images on social networks in the following weeks, which caused violent debates.

These even shifted to a meeting of the interior committee of the Japanese House of Representatives, where MP Masato Imai, a member of the constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ), questioned the legality of these images.

Hirohiko Nakahara, an official of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology, took the question and explained that the final decision on any copyright violations would be in the courts, but the current interpretation of the law indicated that that indicated that “The mere resemblance to a certain style or a certain idea is not punishable” be.

Because copyright would “Do not protect styles or ideas that do not achieve the level of creative expression”. It would look different “If AI generated content is similar or dependent on an existing copyrighted work”. Then there could be a copyright infringement.

In summary, the use of a general style is still legal, but an exception of too tightly punished. The question of where the border is drawn in the end should probably still prepare a lot of work for the dishes.
