Picking oneself up from the ground after a devastating loss and preparing for life’s challenges is not something only heroes do. It is the fundamental nature of humans to fight back, which is true for even supervillains stuck in another world. Specifically, an isekai anime like Suicide Squad Isekai. One episode ago, Suicide Squad experienced their first taste of true defeat, not from one of the many magical folks in this fairy tale land, but from the people from their own world. Disavowed by everyone, the only thing left for them to do is take revenge or die when their time runs out.

Animated by Wit Studio and produced by Warner Bros. Animation’s Asia-Pacific wing, Suicide Squad Isekai Episode 7 is this anime’s most ambitious outing to date. Amanda Waller’s previous Task Force X not only sided with the enemy state, but is also targeting the new team. To that end, Thinker sets a trap around the portal that resets the Suicide Squad’s neck bombs every 72 hours. With such an intriguing build-up and an increase of the stakes, Episode 7 has no choice but to go all out on the action. From Harley Quinn taking on Thinker in a grudge match to Peacemaker’s A-Team-like planning, the story spares no time in going deep into enemy territory, giving audiences a thoroughly enjoyable caper.

Suicide Squad Isekai began on a great premise, promising an outlandish adventure that marries the wacky nature of American comic book characters with the endless possibilities of Japanese anime. Yet, everything, from the politics to the violence has been mellow at best. Action is the only place where the anime shines, as it brings out the absolute worst of the Suicide Squad in the best way possible. It took some time, but Suicide Squad Isekai Episode 7 finally figured out the magical formula of letting Harley and the others do what they do best:spread chaos. The episode starts slow, with a flashback setting up the atmosphere. As the characters gather around to come up with a plan to infiltrate Thinker’s fort, the episode gets into the groove and playfully turns up the humor. The camaraderie of the Suicide Squad is a revelation, as much of Episode 7’s mischievous tone comes from the characters relying on each other to take the story ahead.
