Tower of God’s Most Important Theme Is the One Fans Overlook

In Tower of God, effective teamwork is a primary factor in the success of climbing the Tower and passing tests. Cooperation is necessary for some tests, no matter how strong a character is, especially Irregulars. In such a competitive environment, teamwork is often the last thing most Regulars think of when participating in a floor’s test. In season one, Bam is a character who has an innocent naivety and views his competition through the lens of cooperation and friendship instead of rivalry and strength. However, after Rachel’s betrayal, Bam (Jyu Viole Grace) rejects everything his former self valued.
At the end of season one, Bam was forcibly enlisted into the mysterious organization of FUG, a criminal syndicate with the goal of killing King Jahad via Slayer Candidates, specific members whose strength has the potential to rival King Jahad’s and who stand a chance at killing him. As the newest Slayer Candidate, Bam (Jyu Viole Grace) now rejects all notions of friendship and teamwork, instead relying on his own power to climb the Tower.
The contrast between Bam in season one and season two is evident, but what really supports his fall from a naive, ignorant boy to Bam’s present self was Rachel’s betrayal. If the person Bam loved and trusted the most were to betray him, who else could he trust but himself? The overall theme of season two, but more broadly speaking, the theme of Tower of God itself, is one of friendship and teamwork. Yes, individuals who are essentially walking gods exist in the Tower, but they are the exception to the rule.
