The vast and multifaceted world of One Piece is filled to the brim with incredibly powerful characters, many of whom could be considered some of the most formidable in all of anime. To survive the challenges the Grand Line poses, the heroes of One Piece have to strain themselves vigorously to get stronger, and no pirate has demonstrated more rapid and impressive growth in abilities than the series’ protagonist himself, Monkey D. Luffy. Granted the advantage of Gomu Gomu no Mi’s rubber properties from the very start, Luffy still had to improve tremendously throughout his lengthy voyage to stand a chance against the series’ greatest fighters.
However, even if Luffy is steadily progressing on his path of becoming his verse’s strongest hero, would he perform just as well in other anime universes? It’s true that, if thrown into a completely different environment with his current abilities, Luffy could easily dominate most conventional anime settings. Yet, some of the more challenging anime universes could give Luffy trouble and even threaten his survival.
While considerably stronger than your average person, Luffy didn’t begin his voyage overpowered, mostly relying on the rubber properties of his body and the advanced strength and agility he obtained through Garp’s harsh training during his childhood. However, in just three short years, Luffy has skyrocketed to the top of his verse, now standing among the Four Emperors and wielding both tremendous strength and authority, even if he rarely takes advantage of the latter. In terms of pure physical abilities, Luffy has reached his peak with the awakening of Gear 5, allowing him to transform into the legendary Sun God Nika. By far the strongest of Luffy’s forms, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika transformation would guarantee his survival in most anime verses.
