Bleach: Uryu Ishida Character Guide
----- ADS-----
Bleach is a shonen “big three” title that, like the other two, features a massive cast of characters while giving the most screen time to the main squad of heroes. That means charcters like Ichigo Kurosaki, Orihime Inoue, Chad, and Uryu Ishida are all gifted with incredible story arcs and rich development all throughout the manga’s and anime’s runs. While Ichigo is the main shonen star, there’s also plenty to love about Uryu Ishida, and at times, he felt like a true shonen protagonist himself.
Uryu Ishida was introduced early in Bleach‘s story as a would-be nemesis of Ichigo’s, determined to uphold the bitter Soul Reaper/Quincy feud that had endured for centuries. Before long, though, Uryu became one of Ichigo’s best friends and fought by his side in many supernatural adventures, all the way to the very end. To know Uryu Ishida is to love him, from his sympathetic background and strong friendships to his remarkable abilities and the fun quirks that make him who he is.
Overall, Uryu’s family history is a grim and dramatic one, and there is precious little happiness to be found in the Ishida family. The oldest known Ishida was a Quincy man named Soken Ishida, who was proud to be a member of the Quincy tribe, but not necessarily arrogant about it. He had a warm, nurturing personality, one that was not necessarily inherited by his son, Ryuken. As a teenager living in Karakura Town, Ryuken was generally calm and detached, like an anime kuudere, and only became emotional and desperate when his relative, Masaki Kurosaki, faced certain death after a Hollow poisoned her. Ryuken and Masaki might have married, but in the end, Captain Isshin Shiba married Masaki, and when he grew up, Ryuken married his family’s maid, a Quincy woman named Kanae Katagiri.
