Season 7 of My Hero Academia has had some of the most climactic moments of the franchise. One event in particular that fans were looking forward to was Shoto Todoroki’s fight against Dabi. Many details of family trauma and character dynamics have built up this battle as one of the most important in the entire series. At the center of this battle is Shoto’s new abilities, which are key in turning the tide of the war.
At first glance, Shoto’s signature move, Great Glacial Aegir, is just a powered-up version of his quirk, but there are so many layers to this ability and to his character. Shoto’s growth has gradually become a huge part of the plot, so his new move is equally important. Since this is a devastating blow to Dabi, the mastery of this incredible attack changes everything for the plot, but under the surface, the symbolism and development of Shoto’s character can’t be understated.
Throughout the MHA franchise, both heroes and villains have signature moves that they keep in reserve to turn the tide of a battle. These special moves are the most powerful attack in their arsenal, and they hone them to perfection an ace in the hole against a powerful enemy. Many of the heroes have shined with their own signature move, except for Shoto Todoroki, who has spent much of the franchise building himself as a person and as a hero. He’s never really taken the spotlight until he showed his mastery of his own signature move, Great Glacial Aegir.
