This Summer 2024 Anime Isekai’d Osamu Dazai Into a Fantasy World

Summer 2024’s collection of anime has gifted anime fans with a slew of new series that are well worth the price of Crunchyroll’s subscriptions, but one in particular stands out as a witty and satirical dark comedy about the isekai genre, whose main character is heavily inspired by the real-life historical figure, Osamu Dazai. Although he is only ever referred to as “Sensei” in this new anime, the connection to the tragic and talented writer is clear. Even the show’s title, “No Longer Allowed in Another World,” references Osamu Dazai’s last completed work, No Longer Human.
No Longer Allowed in Another World is not for viewers with sensitive souls, as it brings a sardonic humor to the themes of depression and suicidal ideation. The anime begins by referencing Osamu Dazai’s manner of death: the double suicide he commits with his lover. The comical twist comes in the form of the infamous “isekai truck,” which, of course, spirits the protagonist into the jarring RPG-esque fantasy world called Zauberberg. There, he is told that the fates have chosen him to be a hero. The running gag? This chosen hero wants absolutely nothing to do with the noble purpose he’s been given.
