What Ash Phoenix’s Latest Reveal Means for Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture

Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture has given long-time fans of the franchise and new viewers alike a compelling story that continues the feud between the Britannians and the Japanese, though this time it follows Sakuya Sumeragi — the secret identity of the titular character, Rozé — and her partner, Ash Phoenix, as they try to reclaim Japanese liberation from the Neo-Britannians. However, unbeknownst to Ash, Sakuya has her own goals and secrets that, after the reveals of episode 6, may begin to change course.
Episode 6 of Rozé of the Recapture follows the cast in the aftermath of the Battle of Sapporo, where Neo-Britannia launched an attack on the Sapporo Ghettos using the remaining F.L.E.I.J.A. warheads stored within the Damocles. After a successful battle won by the Japanese factions, albeit with many casualties, Ash and “Rozé” take another day off apart from each other to rest and recoup, only to end up meeting later on with Sakuya dressed as “Raspberry.” It is then that, after eavesdropping on Ash’s conversation with Narah Vaughn, Sakuya makes two shocking discoveries: 1. Ash was not the one who killed Jugo Sumeragi. And 2. Ash has a familial connection to Norland von Lunebelg, the Kingpin of Neo-Britannia.
Ash Phoenix is the Britannian pilot of the Zi-Apollo Knightmare and the leading male protagonist of Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture. As far as most people know, he is Rozé’s caring and doting older brother. However, that fact is secretly nothing more than a mere cover created by Sakuya Sumeragi. In actuality, Sakuya used her Geass to manipulate Ash into believing that Rozé (Sakuya’s public alter ego) is a real person who Ash is absolutely devoted to. As the audience finds out earlier in the series, Sakuya did this to not only gain Ash as a protector and useful pawn, but to also keep him close because she had believed that he was the one responsible for her father’s death.
