During its decade-long run, My Hero Academia has spawned several of the most recognizable and iconic villains in modern shōnen. The League of Villains’ fire starter, Dabi, is one of the series’ most compelling villains. Though he kept his cards close to his chest when he was first introduced, Dabi’s secrecy paid off as he ended up becoming the central figure in one of the series’ most shocking and impactful reveals. He may not have been the series’ final villain, but Dabi’s eventual fate ended up cementing his place as one of MHA’s most pivotal characters, emphasizing the story’s central themes of empathy and healing in the face of overwhelming adversity.
Dabi’s story belongs to him as much as it does to the entire Todoroki family. His entire character arc was influenced by his childhood experiences in Endeavor’s household, and those memories became the fuel for his villainous agenda. For most of the series, Dabi’s raison d’etre was seeking vengeance against Endeavor and Shoto, and his powerful Cremation Quirk made him a formidable opponent to even his family members who shared similar Quirk factors.
Dabi was originally known as Toya Todoroki, and he was both Endeavor’s first son and attempt at training a hero that would grow to surpass him and eventually All Might. When Endeavor realized the limits of his Hellflame Quirk would never allow him to reach All Might’s heights of power, he resolved to birth a child with the perfect mix of Ice and Flame Quirks. His solution was to enter into a Quirk marriage with Rei Himura, in hopes that their offspring would possess the desired abilities. Their arrangement had mixed results as Toya, their first child, inherited a Flame Quirk even more powerful than Endeavor’s, but a body that was more suited to withstanding the sub-zero temperatures his mother’s Quirk was capable of producing.
