A recent Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants game featured a surprise shoutout to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure as MLB star Shohei Ohtani walked up to the plate, courtesy of Ohtani’s wife Mamiko Tanaka in celebration of “Women’s Night” at LA’s Dodger Stadium.
Via Yahoo News (JP), The latest Dodgers game saw star hitter and designated pitcher Shohei Ohtani walk up the plate to “Il vento d’oro,” a song from the fourth season of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure‘s “Golden Wind” arc. Chosen by the player’s wife, Mamiko Tanaka, for “Women’s Night,” which saw the players enter to songs chosen by their partners. Ohtani’s usual walk-up music of “The Show Goes On” by rapper Lupe Fiasco was swapped out for the Yugo Kanno piece, usually played when the heroes figure out the best trick or strategy to beat their adversarial stand users.
Mamiko Tanaka, a professional basketball player, married Ohtani in February this year, with the two going public in May. Tanaka’s song of choice is extremely fitting, as “Il vento d’oro” is often described as Golden Wind’s victory or execution theme — a vote of confidence from his partner as Ohtani takes American baseball by storm, remaining only one hit away from his 250th home run. Many online have speculated whether Tanaka is a fan of the anime, with this serving as some confirmation. Even song composer Yugo Kanno got in on the fun, posting to his X (formerly Twitter) account, “It seems that Ohtani used a song from JoJo as his entrance music. I’m honored! Congratulations on the two-run double!”
